Dr. Rajiv I. Modi
Dr. Rajiv I. Modi is the Chairman and Managing Director of Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd., one of India’s largest privately held pharmaceutical companies founded by his father Shri Indravadan A. Modi in 1951. Upon assuming the company’s leadership in 2012, Dr. Modi charted a multi-pronged approach for its corporate growth. With a vision to revolutionize the life sciences industry, he has played a pivotal role in establishing research, manufacturing, sales and distribution for Cadila Pharma across the globe. Today, Cadila has a strong global presence with operations in the USA, Japan, CIS, and Africa, with an overseas formulations manufacturing unit at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Being a biotechnologist himself, Dr. Modi has played a significant role in developing Cadila’s Biotechnology Division into a strong Research and Development unit, focusing on new developments and breakthrough innovations.
Dr. Rajiv Modi’s passion to excel in the field of biosciences is reflected in his illustrious educational qualifications: Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA; M.Sc. in Biochemical Engineering from University College, London, U.K.; and B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, India.
An academician, Dr. Rajiv Modi was elected as Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, New Delhi – an elite academy with prominent industry leaders, academics and scientists amongst its Fellows. He was the winner of the Genetic Society of America’s Best Scientific Poster at the International Genetics Congress held in August 1988 by the Genetic Society of America. He was invited as a Speaker and participant at the Gordon Research Conference on Microbial Evolution and Population Biology in July 1989 at Plymouth State College, New Hampshire, USA.
Dr. Modi is the current Chairman of Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) for 2020-2024.
An entrepreneur, Dr. Rajiv Modi has actively participated in the ‘Make in India’ mission endorsing his support for several ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summits through various leadership roles. He served as the Chairman of the CII Gujarat State Council during 2013-2014, as Chairman of the CII National Committee on Pharmaceuticals for 2015-2018 and as Chairman of Research Council of Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow for 2017- 2020 (July).
He serves as Chairman and Director in various Group of Companies of Cadila. Under his visionary leadership, the group diversified into city gas distribution and established Indrashil University, Gujarat in 2018. He served as an Independent Director of Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) from October 2014 – October 2019.
