The man who made affordable medicine a mission

Born in a quiet village of Bharuch, Indravadan Ambalal Modi, I.A. Modi, is fondly known as the ‘Medicine Man of India’. His foresight and dedication helped draft India’s patent policy and laid the foundation of a self-reliant healthcare system. At a time when India depended on foreign pharmaceutical giants, he envisioned a future where every citizen had access to affordable, quality medicines. His compassion for people, paired with his pioneering spirit, laid the foundation for Cadila Pharma.

The first employee, a pillar of care

Shilaben Indravadan Modi joined Cadila Pharma as its first employee, bringing compassion and dedication that would shape the company’s heart. Her concern for people’s well-being inspired the creation of Cadila Gripe, India’s first indigenously produced gripe water, marking the start of Cadila’s journey in serving patients.

Turning struggle into purpose

At just 25, I.A. Modi cycled 40 km daily to reach doctors, taking on every role himself, fueled by a dream to make medicines affordable.

The birth of Cadila Laboratories

On March 13, 1952, I.A. Modi founded Cadila Laboratories, taking his first bold step into pharmaceuticals. One of the earliest creations, Livirubra, brought essential vitamins in liquid form to patients, marking the start of a care-driven journey.

With the first factory at Ghodasar, Cadila began turning its vision into reality, setting the stage for innovation and growth.

The Medicine Man of India

I.A. Modi’s unwavering commitment to accessible healthcare led him to shape the Indian Patents Act and the 1986 Drug Policy, earning him the title Medicine Man of India.’

Care beyond business

Long before CSR became a mandate, I.A. Modi founded Kaka-Ba Hospital as a heartfelt tribute to his cousin Budh, who lost his life to typhoid for lack of medical care. Today, the hospital provides multi-speciality, free healthcare to thousands in need.

Cadila Laboratories was restructured and renamed Cadila Pharmaceuticals, marking a fresh beginning.

Cadila Pharma strengthened its manufacturing footprint with state-of-the-art facilities in Dholka, Samba, and Ankleshwar, scaling production while keeping patient care at the core.

Building our second home and life-changing innovations

We set up Ethiopia’s first WHO-cGMP-compliant plant, while pioneering world-first treatments for cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, and tuberculosis with Polycap, Mycidac-C, Risorine, Rabeloc IV, and Immuvac.

Dr. Rajiv I. Modi meets U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard in Washington, DC, as part of the CII CEOs delegation, strengthening international collaboration.

Dr. Rajiv I. Modi, also the Chairman of IIT Guwahati’s Board of Governors, inaugurated the advanced Electron Microscopic Facilities at IIT Guwahati. He also represented Cadila Pharma at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where he spoke on the development of Jharkhand at the #MakeinIndia Lounge.

We launched Bilastine syrup (30 ml) and tablets (20mg), providing effective relief from allergic rhinitis.

We inaugurated an oxygen plant at Kaka-Ba Hospital, Hansot, as part of Project SAAHAS, a holistic initiative aimed at strengthening public healthcare.

We launched Tarzed, a life-saving therapy for HER2-positive early-stage and metastatic breast cancer, while its social campaign against tuberculosis earned global recognition as one of the ‘Best Record Holders,’ highlighting our commitment to both innovation and community health.

Cadila Pharma's breakthrough three-dose rabies vaccine, ThRabis®, won the “Innovation Pharma of the Year” at the prestigious India Pharma World Awards. The company was also recognised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as one of India’s Top 50 Innovative Companies, celebrating its commitment to transformative healthcare.
